The fourth Amazon Go store just opened, but a new report claims a lot more could be on the horizon.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon is considering opening up to 3,000 locations of its cashier-less Amazon Go concept by 2021. To get to that huge number in just two to three years would require Amazon to drastically up its expansion pace.

An Amazon spokesperson said “we don’t comment on rumors or speculation,” in response to GeekWire’s inquiry.

The original store opened in January in the base of Amazon’s Day One officer tower. Store number two at the Madison Centre office building in downtown Seattle didn’t open for another seven months. The third location opened a week later in one of Amazon’s office buildings at 300 Boren Ave. N. in the South Lake Union neighborhood.

Amazon also recently opened the first Amazon Go store outside of Seattle in Chicago. Amazon has committed to opening stores in New York and San Francisco.

In order for Amazon to get to 3,000 stores by the beginning of 2021, it would have to open approximately 107 stores a month. To get to that figure by the end of 2021, it would have to open about 77 stores a month.

Amazon Go threatens traditional convenience store companies like 7-Eleven, as well as chain fast food sandwich and lunch chains like Subway. For comparison, there are close to 67,000 7-Eleven locations around the globe.
