Solving the world’s biggest problems seems like a daunting task, but so did getting a man to the moon, connecting computers across the globe, or inventing self-driving cars. The fact is that when we come together with brilliant minds and a desire to solve a problem, we develop technology and one day achieve our goal. Global Impact’s mission is to inspire greater giving. What does that mean? We want to inspire you to put your money in the hands of partners that are doing the unthinkable— they are solving the world’s biggest problems.
Through their generosity, workplace donors have made it possible to reduce hunger, increase education access, break the chain of human trafficking, and improve medical systems to prevent disease and treat the ill.
You can help make these programs possible and fund innovation by giving at work. Giving through your workplace offers consistent funding, the flexibility to use the funds where needed most and often they receive more because of generous matching gift programs of your employer.
Here are a few examples of how charities are using technology to change the world:
Americares helps deliver medical supplies faster via drones
In Ghana, it would typically take hours or days for medical supplies to arrive via ground shipments. In a partnership with Zipline and Women’s Health to Wealth, Americares has helped cut down that delivery time, reduce contact and ultimately lower the risk of infection while delivering cleaning supplies and medicine.
Accion improves economic development with digital financial services
As part of their mission to create a financially inclusive world with a pioneering legacy in microfinance and fintech impact investing, Accion has helped farmers in Guatemala provide for their families, endure challenges brought on by climate change, obtain loans and efficiently yield their best crops. Access to digital financial resources is helping entrepreneurs and small businesses thrive.
Grameen Foundation improves crops in developing countries with text messages
Digital farming is the way of the future to ensure farmers yield a good crop. Using texts, voice messages and call-in radio, Grameen Foundation alerts farmers of weather forecasts, pest prevention, farming tips and development plans so they can improve how they provide for themselves and their families.
Heifer International builds blockchain networks for agricultural development
In order to bring farmers closer to markets and reduce transaction costs, Heifer International is helping digitize value chains. In Honduras, for example, blockchain technology is being implemented for coffee production from plant to cup. By keeping track of each step digitally, Heifer is helping improve food security and fair trade.
HIAS helps refugees find jobs using an app
By partnering with SkillLab, HIAS is promoting economic integration for refugees in Ecuador, Peru and Panama. Through the app, refugees can input their experience in their native language and connect to career opportunities in their host country, helping them find employment and get on their feet faster. It also helps employers and the overall economy of the host country.
Women for Women International connects women to support with cell phones
In places like Rwanda, Iraq and Nigeria, Women for Women International provided individual sim cards so that women could initiate bank transfers, avoid feelings of isolation, receive healthcare advise and remain safe from domestic violence throughout strict COVID-19 lockdowns. Radio broadcasts have also been used for women with limited literacy.
There is still much to be done, especially in our continued fight against poverty. You can be a global champion by giving to international causes. Help achieve social justice, protect our one and only planet, prevent the next pandemic and promote a better future for all.
Do you want to help? Giving through your workplace is convenient and can amplify your generosity through payroll pledges and matching gifts. Donations to our Charity Alliance reach communities around the world to make an impact both locally and internationally.
